Principal Update December 3, 2017
Welcome to December! Although thus far, we are having mild weather, please remember our children go outside every day for recess unless the weather (including wind chill) is below 5 degrees OR if the weather is actively raining or two icing for safety.
Here is what is happening at Brookdale:
NEXT ENGAGE 204 ON DECEMBER 7
The second Engage 204 session takes place December 7 from 7 to 9 pm at Still Middle School, 787 Meadowridge Drive, Aurora. This session will focus on "Changing Enrollment: Balancing Buildings and Boundaries." Engage 204 is a collaborative process between the community and District 204 to ensure a strong future for the district and its students. The community engagement sessions explore different aspects of the district, including, enrollment, district finances, and other key issues involved in maintaining a successful educational experience for students. Key to the success of this process is the collaboration and discussion between participants. District residents who attend will have the unique opportunity to share ideas and discuss topics in small groups in order to provide feedback to the Board of Education. Key findings and recommendations will be presented to the Board of Education by July 2018. All District 204 residents are invited to participate in Engage 204. RSVP is appreciated, but not required at Http://ipsd.us/KJWKJ. For more information, visit http://engage204.org.
TEAM IPEF SPIRIT SQUAD
It was discovered this week that we never shared the results of our TEAM IPEF efforts. Our four runners, Jen Birkner, Allen Sapoznik, Joe Tabisz and Leah Walsh raised a total of $1,657.00— half of which ($828.50) is returned to Brookdale School. In addition, our Brookdale Spirit Squad tied with third place, which earned an additional $125.00 for our school. Therefore, TEAM IPEF earned Brookdale school a total of $953.50!!! So excited and appreciative of everyone that worked hard for our school, especially our four runners!

WINTER WELLNESS REMINDERS FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE
With winter holidays approaching, many of us will be hosting, or travelling to, our families and friends across the country. While it is a wonderful time for gathering together, it is also unfortunately a time when we can find ourselves becoming ill. According to the CDC, flu activity is only sporadic in Illinois at this time, but as always it is important to be proactive in preventing influenza-like illnesses and/or viruses from spreading. Regular hand-washing using proper technique, particularly before and after activities (eating, bathroom use, coughing and sneezing, as examples), is one of the very best best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs to others. I encourage you to consider this a teaching moment with your child. If you believe your child is sick (if your child has a deep/barking cough, sore throat and fever over 100 degrees and/or has vomited), please keep them home from school (at least 24 hours after a fever and/or vomiting has subsided without the use of fever-reducing and/or anti-nausea medication).
Not only is winter cold and flu season, but it is also the season of an increased incidence of lice. When lice are found on a child at school, the child’s parents/guardians are informed, and we ask that the child be picked up from school. Our District Policy requests proof of treatment (either receipt or box top from treatment method, or a physician’s statement) before a child’s return to school. In following Health Department recommendations, parents are not notified if there is a student with lice in the school/class nor do we do head checks. Please talk with your child about not sharing hats and coats. Wearing long hair up in braids or buns can also be good prevention this time of year.
Kindly remember to call the school's attendance line promptly in the morning and report your child’s absence, stating the reason for their absence at (630) 428-6800, press #3. Sharing his/her symptoms early with the health office allows us to monitor patterns of illness. Feel free to call and speak with Nurse Lynn if you have questions about your child’s specific illness in relation to school attendance.
