Principal Update September 24, 2017
This was a hot week at Brookdale. With the increase in air-conditioned classrooms, we were able to make sure all students were in a cool location for at least 4 hours each of the hot days. The staff and students did a great job at being flexible and sharing of their classrooms to allow these cooling rotations.
Here is what is happening at Brookdale:
UPDATE ON MR. SCHUMANN
Many of you are probably aware, but Mr. Schumann had a horrible accident last weekend which resulted in a broken pelvis and leg. Since last Monday, he has undergone three surgeries to repair the damage. At this time, he is recovering in the hospital but he has a long road ahead to a full recovery. We are expecting him to be out for the next four to six months. We will surely miss him and are sending him well-wishes on a daily basis. We were able to secure Mrs. Betty Slater as a Long Term Substitute to begin next week. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

GUEST SPEAKER AT NVHS FOR PARENTS
On Thursday, September 28 at 7 pm in the Neuqua Valley Auditorium, there will be an outstanding public talk from Kevin Sabet, former White House Drug Policy Advisory. This talk is aimed at parentsas the topic is not age appropriate for pre, elementary, or middle school age students. It is a talk that all parents should hear.
Mr. Sabet served as Drug Policy Advisor during an era when many states legalized marijuana for medical and/or recreational use despite current federal law. He will speak on the potential consequences of “big marijuana” as corporate producers follow in the footsteps of “big tobacco” in terms of recruiting young customers in the hopes they will become lifelong customers. He will also share some of the health, legal, and policy implications of increased legalization and decriminalization of marijuana. What does it mean for a generation of children coming of age in an era when marijuana seems “not that bad” given the lowered criminal consequences, increased access, and growth in use? A flyer is attached.
PARENT DIVERSITY ADVISORY COUNCIL (PDAC) - MEETING SUMMARY
On September 19th, the Parent Diversity Advisory Council (PDAC) hosted its first meeting of the school year with focused discussion on: Unpacking the “Invisible Knapsack” Students Bring to School: Understanding Implicit Bias, Advantages and Disadvantages. We engaged in dialogue about the prevalent dynamics of implicit bias that affect everyone and how we can work to become increasingly aware of them. PRESENTATION SLIDES from the meeting are now available. For upcoming PDAC meetings, please see the CALENDAR or visit PDAC subpage for further information.
